Moonlight

Moonlight Summary

  • Chiron is a character of few words. Why is this?                                                                           --> I think he does not have any confidence. This is because he has not been taught the basic life skills to survive in the type of area he lives in. Furthermore, he is being rejected by his parents; this makes him try and take action of his own life and find people who will take care of him and help him. Another reason, why he is a person of few words is because since a young age he was bullied; you can infer that he did not have a voice to fight back. Also, he was not taught to defend himself. Therefore, he is perceived as someone who is weak and emotional. Adding to this, he did not know himself. This means that he was not able to express himself as a person because his identity was very hard for him to find. Furthermore, he was not taught the simple norms and values of society to function making him not able to be a sociable person.
  • How do the three actors use body language to communicate Chiron’s emotions to the audience?                                                                                                                                          --> All the character use very similar body language to show his emotions. In every section, he showed a lot of anger when he was with his mother, and he did the same expression to show this. When he gets bullied and attack by other people he is not bothered; he shows no emotion and his body language shows that.
  • Why is he reluctant to make eye contact with people?                                                                    --> I think he is always reluctant to make eye contact with people because he is trying to understand their ways. Also, to see if people can really see the pain in living in. This might be because there is a sense of identity loss in him. He was not taught the norms of society making him feel like an outsider.
  • Did anything about the Miami setting surprise you, compared to its party image in popular culture? How does the saturated color capture the image of the city the filmmakers are trying to convey?                                                                                                                                              --> The Miami setting seemed quiet and it was like an isolated area that was meant for him. The setting represented the emotions and characteristics of Chiron.
  • What is the significance of Juan? How is his influence felt over the entire film, despite the fact he is only present in the first chapter?                                                                                              --> Juan is a very significant character because he helps Chiron from a young age. He gave him the simple necessities that he needed to survive. He showed him ways to enjoy life. For example by taking him to the beach, Which Chiron remembered. Juan introduced Chiron to his wife/girlfriend and ever since she helped he survive; whenever he got kicked out of the house by his mum or didn’t wanna go home he would stay with her. He influenced Chiron a lot he helped him a lot with his identity and gave him advice on a daily.
  • Several key sequences take place on the beach, or near the ocean. Why do you think the filmmakers centered so much of the film around this location?                                                        --> I think they centered it around the ocean because at the beginning the only time Chiron was enjoying life was when he went to the sea. F
  • Did anything about Chiron in the final chapter surprise you?                                                         --> Chiron in the final chapter was very surprising because many things changed about him. Physically he became fitter and healthier. Furthermore, the fact that he became a drug dealer. Him becoming a drug dealer gave the audience a sense that he still did not find his identity. However, he seemed to learn the norms and values of his society which helped him a lot. On the other hand, he still was a man of few words which was very surprising because he is a drug dealer which means you must seem like you have some power when you speak; but he seems weak and intimidated by others.
  • To what extent do you think he is being true to “himself” before and after his reunion with Kevin? What did you make of his various nicknames?                                                                   --> The fact that Chiron built up the courage to see Kevin and tell him that he was the only person to ever touch him was surprising because some people expected Chiron to have a girlfriend or to have moved on. I think Chiron has been true to himself because he is the same person from chapter one to three but just more confident and verbal towards others. Chiron still loved his mother till the very end despite her raising him poorly and being a drug addict, he continued to meet her but also built his own life. His nicknames play a part in his life and show how we went from a 'lil man' to a big man who is in control of his own life now.
