Deutschland 83: close textual analysis

Scene 1:

  • Traditional music seen playing throughout the party, East.
  • Run down old house, East.
  • Jar of coffee seen as luxurious, East.
  • "The army is treating you well", stereotypes of men going to war and serving their country.
  • Larger variety of food choices is seen in the west bbq party.
  • Houses are modernized and clean, West.
  • Sophisticated atmosphere and people, men seen wearing smart clothing i.e suits representing the western wealth.
  • Camera circles around the three characters, hints of surveillance and references to spy narrative.
Scene 2:
  • People seen wearing more fashionable clothing (vibrant, colourful).
  • Police seen eating an ice cream whilst on duty, laid back lifestyle compared to East Germany.
  • Luxurious: Wood paneling, stained glass window.
  • Colourful and perfectly stacked shelves of food, shows the difference in lifestyles between east and west.

Scene 3:
  • Montage style editing - used to show time passing and how quick he has to learn all this new information.
  • Quick cuts between all the products he has to learn - emphasize how much he has to learn once again.
  • Up beat music matches editing pace
  • Shots through windows, mirror and behind the trees - make the audience feel like they are spying on the process
  • Intertextuality - similar to James Bond style films, 'Rocky training montage'.
  • Audience pleasures - dramatic irony, audience know what actually happened to Mortiz
  • Split screen, contrast between East and West Germany - represents the Berlin Wall.

Scene 4:
  • First shot was through window and blind - spy narrative
  • Music increases once he hears the general approach - creates tension
  • Extreme close ups of the film - emphasis on words 'Nuclear' and 'Confidential' also creates tension.
  • Close up of protagonist's reaction to the file.
  • Audience pleasure - based on real events.
  • Shot from top corner of the room - CCTV style camerawork.
  • Sped up match on action - emphasis on how quickly he has to get the files.
  • Diegetic sound  turned up - protagonist's heavy breathing.
  • Visceral pleasure - able to feel tension within the scene.
