Coursework: Preliminary exercise

Now complete the following tasks:

1) State the genre you have chosen - horror or coming of age drama.

--> Horror

2) Choose at least five films in your selected genre and watch the trailer and one scene from each film. Make bullet-point notes on everything you watch, commenting on camerawork, editing, sound and mise-en-scene.

--> Sinister- The mise-en-scene in this movie is kept to a very minimum, not many props are used, the use of make up is kept to a minimum and is very natural. This allows it to be more realistic as it makes it more real. Most of the shots taken are close up. Constant zoom into the face.

Scary movie- The mise en scene in this trailer is her dramatics. The costumes used are very typical of a horror movie. The editing is very mainstream. They give a sense of other genres such as drama and comedy. The camera shot are not very specific there are so many different type of shot. This trailer sound is very contrapuntal its a scary movie but the sound doesn't match the genre of the trailer.

The Nun- The lighting in this trailer is very dark and lowkey. It makes it seem as if the whole movie was filmed in the evening. The mise en scene in this trailer is very traditional like 19th century.

Get Out- The mise en scene in this film is very casual and unexpected. The sound is very contrapuntal makes the scenes coming unexpected.this allows the audience to be intrigued by everything that is going on. the lighting is high key which is not expected in horror movies.

The Crucifixion- The camera work in this film is all extreme close ups. this gives the genre life and allows it to have a sense of thriller in it.

3) Write a 250 word statement of intent for your film scene. This should follow AQA's guidance (look in your coursework booklet) and clearly lay out how you will use media language to meet your brief. You should also discuss what representations you plan to create (either reinforcing or challenging stereotypes) and how your scene would appeal to an audience.

My Short film will be low budget and will be 60 seconds of a horror featured film. I was inspired to create this film by the making of the Exorcist and Paranormal Activity, The elements of horror included in this allowed me to engage with the theme and the type of short film I would like to create. Many horror movies hardly include dialogue which will be difficult because I have to make sure there is some piece of dialogue. The main film will include a short video of two characters; one will be having a mental breakdown and the other will be a demon that is making her paranoid.
Horror movies have a strong sense of thriller in it. This allows people to gain the elements of horror that are meant to be part of the film. Furthermore, the best films for horror are those that include a lot of tension and have a build-up of thriller so that the audience are always engaged with the movie.

I intend to create something very dark and represent elements of both the movies that inspired me to make this short scene. It will allow young audiences to be interested in this. This film will be a micro budget and will be funded through small companies such as BFI which helps young filmmakers to allow there content to be seen online. I hope to create a film that has horror and a thrill to it so that the audience are always interested.

4) Write a script for your film scene. You'll find guidance for writing a script in the BBC Writrs' Room (click on the Script Library to read real examples of professional scripts).
-->

5) Storyboard at least five key shots from your scene, take a photo of the storyboard and upload it to your blogpost. What visual style are you trying to create? Storyboard sheets are available in DF07.

6) Write a shot list containing EVERY shot you plan to film AND additional shots to create flexibility when editing. These additional shots are often close-ups, cutaways, alternative angles or similar. I advise using a simple table on Microsoft Word to set out your shot list - you can find an example here.

--> Start with a wide shot of Hafsa's Face.
--> Then go into an extreme close-up of her crying
--> Then a close up again
--> Then long shot of the distance of everything which includes her in it looking possessed
--> Finally a close up of her and the demon in a shot and Hafsa screaming.
--> At the end include vioce over of her thoughts and what is going through her mind

7) Plan your mise-en-scene: what iconography are you including to ensure your audience understands the genre? Plan your cast, costume, make-up, props, lighting, and setting.
Iconography I will be including:

  1. Makeup on both characters, The main character, and the demon
  2. Lighting has to be very lowkey so that we can capture the scariness of the short scene.
  3. Propps will be kept to a minimum, only included a table and a chair
  4. customer nothing too exaggerating.
  5. I will only include 2 actors in this short scene.

8) Plan a shooting schedule that will ensure everything is filmed by Wednesday 27 June. Include when, where, who is required and what shots you will complete at each time/location.

--> I will be shooting my short film in school in the drama studio.
--> it must be very dark so that we can capture the theme of it.
-->First will shot the first actor for about 20 mins to make sure that I can get the sections that she is in alone
--> Then include the second person and make sure the video took all have some type of connection. So that it doesn't baitly look like it has been two different shots.
-->The time will be after school so that noone is there and it is some sort quite
