Mise-en-scene

Coursework: Pre-production - Mise-en-scene

Create a Mise-en-scene blogpost planning everything that will appear in front of the camera in your two-minute film trailer.

Remember CLAMPS: Costume, Lighting, Actors (cast, placement and movement), Make-up, Props, Setting.

Costume
What will your characters wear? What is the costume supposed to communicate to the audience? How does this link to your Statement of Intent in terms of creating representations?
--> In terms of costumes, It will be very different depending on the location of the scene. When filming in the church they will be wearing clothes that are normally worn to a church such as sophisticated smart wear. The father will be wearing a suit and the mother will be wearing a white bodycon dress and Sasha will also be wearing a floral dress because of floral shows a sense of innocence which is what I want to be conveying during these scenes. However, during the school scenes, Sasha will be wearing bright color casual clothing, but it will change and become darker once she meets her boyfriend, things become dark and she starts wearing darker clothing. Her boyfriend, Derek, will be an attractive young boy who wearings casual clothing because he has to be perceived as being normal but inside he is manipulative. The next location is the house of Sasha's family, In there they will be wearing comfortable clothing to show that her place of comfort and to show the audience how comfortable she is at home. It will also show how their family relationship is.

Lighting
How will you light your trailer? Day or night? Interior or exterior? If outside, can you use streetlights, shadows, reflected sunlight or other creative techniques to achieve the lighting style you want? If inside, experiment with creative lighting techniques using windows, blinds, artificial lights, phone flashes and more.
--> In terms of lighting, I will be using high key lighting to make the shots and scenes look more realistic. Most of the filming will be done during the daytime because I am showing her life through a time line and to represent this I will have to be filming Sasha's life during the day and morning. Some scenes will have natural sunlight to give that sense that Sasha's life is changing. At some stages, I will be using lowkey light to give that sense of change and how she goes from being a good girl to becoming a bad girl.

Actors
The first thing you need to plan is your cast - who will be in your production and which characters will they play? Try and cast people who are reasonably similar to the character they are playing (both in age and personality). Next, plan their placement and movement in key scenes in your trailer. Do you want them to appear trapped in a claustrophobic close-up? Or isolated as a tiny person in a wide shot?
--> Hafsa will be playing my main character as Sasha. I will be representing her to be an isolated person in a wide shot. Hafsa will be a black female

Make-up
Plan any make-up you require - this could be particularly important for horror trailers.
--> For make-up, most of the scenes will consist of natural makeup because it everyday make up that is what needs to be conveyed. The makeup turns dark when she starts going down a different road and are character starts to act up and change. Dark make up will be used to exaggerate the bags under the eyes and also to make it look like Sasha received a tattoo at a young age.

Props
What props will you require? Remember, you can't use anything that might resemble a weapon in a public or school location (this is VERY important). Well-planned props can help to communicate genre and character quickly - vital in a short trailer.
--> In terms of the props, I will not be using any.
 Setting
This should already be largely planned using your script. However, now is the time to specify exact locations - if a classroom, which one? How will you arrange it with the teacher? When will you film there? For external locations, try and take pictures of settings or use Google Maps and Google Earth. Spending quality time planning your locations can make a huge difference to the professionalism of your film.
--> In terms of setting, my first location will be a church. The church I have chosen is going to be St Micheal and Martin' Church which is a busy and friendly church. The second location will be a flat which will probably be a whole detached house. This is where I will film the scenes with her and her boyfriend doing drugs and stuff. The third location is going to be a school where she meets her boyfriend Derek and where most of the manipulation is done because her parents are not around.
